Editorial: Christmas - From selfishness to other centredness |
Dec 24 (DM) Today the world celebrates Christmas, the birth of Jesus Christ. In human society only a few individuals have single handedly changed the course of history and Jesus Christ ranks at the top of this list. He was an enigma at the time of birth and at the time of his death and continues to be so even today. Napoleon Bonaparte, imprisoned on an island and reflecting sadly upon the ruins of his empire whilst waiting for death, speaks of this enigma in the most amazing

Stiff challenge for openers on South African tracks |
Dec 24 (CI) If Sri Lankans have nightmares, there's a good chance what they dream of is 22 yards long and green. And the chance of that object appearing in real life soon is imminent. The Kingsmead pitch will likely be another seamer-friendly surface, with bounce that could end up rivalling a trampoline. The humidity will ensure there is swing in the air and South Africa's hungry pack of bowlers will be on the hunt for another early finish. One thing no Sri Lankan wants

Dec 25 (SL) When we reflected on the year that is ending, our thoughts went back to a person whom we like the least but had said an absolute truth about a pathetic failing of Sri Lankans: You fellows just cannot remember a thing beyond two weeks. We wont spoil the festive season by recalling his name but it is true that most of us just cannot recall events beyond two weeks or even less. What happened in 2011? We went to our archives to refresh our memories and it all began falling into place.

Dec 25 (SO) Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said reconciliation has to be carried forward in this post- conflict scenario. He said that Tamil politicians must come out with a reconciliatory approach regarding the problems faced by the people in the North and East. Recalling the past would not serve any purpose. Editorial: A second 88-89 unaffordable! |
Dec 25 (NS) There are two moments in recent history that stand out, both for what they meant to the general population and for what followed: 1977 and 2009. In 1977, the UNP was swept to power after a 7 year hiatus and with a commanding majority. Things would be better, the people hoped, after having lost patience with Sirimavo Bandaranaikes import-substituting, inward-looking, live-within-means efforts which may have worked but in the end turned out to be half-baked.

For those who did not think that the state appointed LLRC commissioners could be quite so open about mistakes made by the Govt of Sri Lanka, there is a certain level of bewilderment they can hardly conceal. The UNP: Where to from here? |
Dec 25 (NS) The drama that constitutes the UNP reached its climax on Monday when Ranil Wickremesinghe regained the mantle of leadership with a convincing 42-vote majority. His challenger Karu Jayasuriya emerged only a distant second. Wickremesinghe was tipped to win. Yet, the margin of his victory took many by surprise.
