Three separate incidents of currency smuggling in one day |
Dec 21 (Island) Adding to the recent spate of detections, two Sri Lankans and an Indian national have been apprehended for smuggling currency in three separate incidents on Tuesday morning at the Bandaranaike International Airport and the Chennai airport. As a result, nearly 11 million rupees worth of undeclared foreign currency has been confiscated by authorities. The first was a Sri Lankan man hailing from Geli Oya who was caught with 33,000 Euros (Rs. 5 million).

Heart surgeries resume at Karapitiya |

Dec 21 (LBO) Overnight money rates spiked over 9.75 percent and gilt backed repurchase deals touched 8.45 percent Wednesday amid defence of a dollar peg and festival demand for cash, dealers said. Navy takes 22 Indian fishermen into custody |

Dec 21 (LBO) Sri Lankan stocks slipped further Wednesday in a continuing slide in thin turnover with the regulator postponing an anticipated decision to allow brokers to give more credit for trading, brokers said. The main All Share Price Index fell 0.16 percent to 5,842.83, while the more liquid Milanka index closed flat at 5,088.25. Turnover was a low 376 million rupees, one of the lowest in recent months, according to stock exchange provisional figures.
