Anamaduwa farmers decry politicians who ruined tank
Sep 30 (ST) Illegal encroachments and landfilling backed by politicians over the years, have ruined an irrigation tank in the Anamaduwa area, thereby affecting thousands of farmers who have less water for their crops. Farmer organisations point out that the Petthikulam tank has lost almost half of its capacity due to encroachments. The 300-year-old tank in Anamaduwa town was used earlier to irrigate some 25 acres of paddy land, but now the cultivable land has been reduced to 10 to 15 acres.

Confusing policy on heavy vehicle imports
Sep 30 (ST) Three years after its financial crisis, SL is allowing commercial vehicle imports but importers say they cannot open letters of credit at banks to do the same. The govt assured to allow such vehicle imports along with construction equipment, and electric vehicle makers, starting September. Firearms licences renewal begins on 1 Oct
Sep 30 (CT) Ministry of Defence made an announcement on the renewal of firearms licences for both individuals and institutions for the year 2024. According to the announcement, the renewal of firearm licences will be accepted from 1 Oct 2023 to 31 Dec 2023. Detailed information and application forms can be obtained from the official website of the Defence Ministry. British woman trapped in Sri Lanka for 13 months says she is out of hope
Sep 30 (LB) A British woman has been trapped in SL for 13 months and is now left out of hope. Kayleigh Fraser, 35, from St Andrews, was visiting the country to study botanical medicine and began sharing videos online of the Aragalaya protests. Fraser, who had been living abroad for over a year, had her home in SL raided in August of last year by immigration officers claiming that she was visiting the country on an invalid visa.

Breast cancer accounts for 26% of all cancer cases: Dr Ishani
Sep 30 (CT) 26% of cancer patients, detected in Sri Lanka, are those with breast cancers, said National Cancer Control Programme Director Dr. Ishani Fernando. She noted that a total 5,329 new patients with breast cancer were detected in 2020. Of them 147 were men. She added that 25% of the cancer patients detected in the world too suffer from breast cancer. She said that a total 37,648 new cancer patients had been detected in 2020 while 15,599 patients had died of cancer in 2019.

51-year-old woman found dismembered; suspect yet to be arrested
Sep 30 (AD) The body of a 51-year-old, who was reported missing since 27 Sept, was recovered by the police on Thursday (28), from the banks of the Kelani River. The deceased, identified as T. G. Pradeepa, was found decapitated and dismembered, SSP Nihal Thalduwa said, adding that relatives of the deceased had confirmed her identity. Pradeepa�s daughter had filed a complaint at the Mulleriyawa Police on Wednesday (27), claiming that her mother had gone missing.

Health Ministry responds to reports of two Nipah virus cases at LRH
Sep 30 (DM) Health Ministry has clarified the reports circulating on social media regarding the detection of two Nipah virus cases in the country. According to these social media reports, two children are currently receiving treatment for the Nipah virus at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital (LRH).
