LIOC requests for price hike
June 17 (DM) Lanka Indian Oil Company (LIOC) said today it had requested the government to permit the company to increase the price of a litre petrol by Rs.20 and the price of a litre of diesel by Rs.5 owing to the huge losses incurred by it. Political parties gearing for LG polls
June 17 (SL) The UPFA is to commence its campaign for the forthcoming local government elections to be held for 64 bodies under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa on June 20. Call to delay UK Tamil deportations to Sri Lanka
June 17 (BBC) Human rights groups have urged the UK not to deport about 40 Tamils to Sri Lanka, warning that they face the risk of being tortured. Amnesty International says that at least one of the failed asylum seekers tried to commit suicide on Wednesday night at an airport detention facility. The fate of the Tamils is currently unclear. Tamil Nadu fishermen released by Sri Lanka
June 17 (PTI) Four Tamil Nadu fishermen, arrested and remanded in judicial custody by Sri Lankan authorities for intruding into Lankan waters, were released today, a top coast guard official said. Sri Lankan naval personnel handed over the fishermen to the ICG at the International Maritime Boundary Line this evening, Indian Coast Guard Commanding Officer H Harish Morre told reporters here. June 17 (LBO) Two state-backed insurance schemes for state workers and agriculture have been topped up with taxes extracted from the people, as premium payments were not enough to cover claim. 'Agrahara' a medical insurance plan for state workers with 650,000 holders had claims of 1,138 million rupees in 2010, while contributions were only 595 million rupees.
