WB grants 40 million to striking universities

Aug 27 (InfoLanka) The World Bank has released a colossal sum to our striking universities. The Bank has decided to grant Rs. 400 million to each university to carry out projects aiming at improving the welfare and academic facilities of undergraduates.

A sum of Rs. 100 million would be given to the three main projects, while about Rs. 20 million would be granted for another five projects.

University officials said these projects would be aimed at improving facilities for the undergraduates and developing mutual understanding among the students of different ethnic groups. "We could utilize these funds on projects to build up understanding among the undergraduates.

For example, a workshop between a University in the south and the Jaffna University could be taken. However, we can not get funds for researches for lecturers or professors," he said.

The funds for these programmes would be released by June next year. A meeting was held yesterday with the participation of Vice Chancellors to discuss the disbursement of these funds.
