Merchandise exports fall 17.31% in 1Q
Apr 29 (FT) SL�s merchandise exports fell by 17.31% to $2.58 billion in the first quarter of 2020, with March predictably suffering the worst decline of 42% due to the rapid expansion of COVID-19 globally impacting vital value chains and suffocating consumer demand. As per latest provisional data, March marked the steepest fall in merchandise exports by 41.93% to $645.98 million compared to $1.12 billion from a year earlier.

Covid-19 cases increase to 630
Apr 29 (TM) 3 more Covid-19 cases have been reported a short while ago, raising the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country to 630. A total of 226 Navy personnel have been infected with COVID-19 so far, Army Commander Lt Gen Shavendra Silva said today. The infected Navy officers include 147 from within the Navy Camp in Welisara and 79 who were on leave. Meanwhile, 2 patients recovered today and were discharged raising the total number of recoveries to 627 .

Apr 30 (Island) Former Police SC paceman and captain Vajira Ranaweera passed away on Tuesday due to a heart ailment. He was 51. An alumni of Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya, Ranaweera rose to prominence as a cricketer after joining SL Police.
