Voices of Peace: A novel approach to peace and reconciliation |
Oct 6 (SO) Nearly a decade after the end of a thirty-year civil war that once racked the island, there are voices still unheard and stories yet untold. With the intent of bringing the conversation of post-conflict reconciliation to the fore, SL researcher and author Sarah Kabir released her book Voices of Peace recently. The launch was held at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute, Colombo, and was attended by a diverse audience of academics, activists, members of the press, and invitees.

When, where and how did separatism originate? |
Oct 6 (CT) When we speak of separatism, it is generally referred to as dividing the land area of a country into two or more compartments. It may be religious divisions, language divisions or racial divisions, to be ruled separately. This is the type of divisions experienced by the world in general and SL in particular. In most countries, separatism is prevented by arms and ammunitions by the ruling govts. SL is no exception. It is also evident that separatism sometimes stems from hunger for

Sri Lankas right to information |
Oct 6 (HM) Right to Information (RTI) laws, which seek to promote accountability by enabling individuals to obtain information from public bodies, have become an important political and legal part of democratic movements in Southasia. Over the past two decades, almost every country in the region has instituted such laws, with Sri Lanka enacting it most recently, in 2016. However, even as the countrys RTI Act has

An indifferent God? |
Oct 6 (CT) I am at a loss to make sense of all this and would like someone to try and help me to understand this. Just now, I watched over Al Jazeera how a pathetic, large-scale human tragedy is unfolding in the Indonesian province of Sulawesi. A 7.5 magnitude colossal earthquake followed by a tsunami has left over hundred thousand people-babes, kids, elderly and the sick included- starving, waiting until international agencies bring food. They have lost their homes.

A response to UK State Minister Mark Field |
Oct 6 (Island) I have just completed reading your Op-ed article titled Why reconciliation in SL matters to UK in a SL newspaper, and decided to respond due to some glaring contradictions between what Britain preaches to others and what it does in practice. Some of the contents therein I wish to highlight are: a) The pace of progress on a number of key issues remains much slower than we hoped for b) Finding the truth is fundamental; c) Prevention of Terrorism Act is something I am regularly

Issues to assess |
Oct 6 (DN) Obviously there are two ways to think of the environment. Firstly the attitude of the poor who is demanding from the surrounding without thinking of the damage done. The other is the civilized with a consciousness about the survival of the environment. This doesnt mean theres only one way to divide the attitude of humans to the environment. There are in fact countless ways of understanding and engaging with the world around us. In the entire history humans,

Amendments that strengthened the peoples sovereignty |
Oct 6 (DN) Another important determination of the Supreme Court which impinged on the Sovereignty of the People was its ruling on the Extension of Life of Parliament. In 1982, this Bill was referred to the Supreme Court by the President in terms of Article 122(1) (b) of the Constitution. The Bill proposed to extend the period of the first Parliament. The Bill was introduced at a time when the life of the first Parliament under the ruling UNP was reaching its end.

Edtorial: Dangerous roads |
Oct 6 (Island) It looks as if Sri Lankans had a death wish. They drive and ride like bats out of hell. The same goes for the jaywalking fraternity. Cattle and dogs seem to have better road sense; the number of those animals ending up as road kill is much lower than that of the supposedly intelligent bipeds who get killed on roads. As many as seven or eight persons perish daily in about 150 road accidents, which leave about 150 injured. Road accidents cost the state coffers dear.

Pitch fixing |
Oct 6 (Island) There could not have been a greater advertisement for Test cricket than this summers Test series in England. Two evenly matched teams locked horns and battled for supremacy in a series which was of great significance to both sides. Not in living memory have India run so close to winning a series 4-1 instead of losing it by that very same margin in England. It was their batting which killed the dream; not their bowling.
