A true believer |
May 24 (SL) Gotabaya Rajapakse is a true believer. His lifes mission was to wipe out the LTTE. While there are those who considered this to be an impossible task, Gotabaya had no such qualms. He believed that he could accomplish in three years what others had failed to achieve in over two decades. His approach appears to have been similar to the one used to crush the JVP in the late 80s that is, fight fire with fire.

Memories of war, dreams of peace |
May 24 (SL) The long and bloody Sri Lankan war is over, and not a moment too soon. I really want to believe it. The alternative is too depressing to consider. Of course, there is no independent verification it has been a war without witnesses for the past many months, with no journalists or humanitarian workers allowed access. We know that history is written by victors, not losers. I am willing to take a leap of faith if thats what we need to usher in the long-elusive peace.

May 24 (SL) Several Sri Lankans, giving thought to the important and urgent challenge the island faces of nation building, are making worthy and well-intentioned contributions. I am privileged and fortunate to know a few Sinhalese individuals who, by innate nature and nurtured principle, uphold justice and our common, human, equality. And there are many other Sinhalese who, though not known to me personally, cherish and live by these same values.

Sorry, no afterlife for Prabhakaran or the LTTE |
May 24 (AT) When gods turn out to be mortal the worshippers are benumbed and languish in disbelief. It is natural for the most nave to cling on to the flimsiest of hope that the death was fabrication. After all, when those who are immortalized come to take up residence in vast swathes of ones sense of meaning and being, and pledge over and over again to create for one a private heaven on earth, mortality is insufferable.
