Jan 17 (LBO) Overnight money rates spiked in Sri Lanka's inter bank market and bond rates picked up amid tighter liquidity and the monetary authority opened its 12.00 percent liquidity facility. Overnight call rates which were around 13.00/50 percent levels spiked to 16.00/50 as the inter bank market was short on a net basis. On Thursday the banking system was short by 1.9 billion rupees, a reversal of the net excess levels seen earlier.

More civilians fleeing fighting |
Jan 17 (IRIN) The residents of Mullaithivu, deep in the conflict-affected areas known as the Vanni, in the north, have witnessed an escalation of clashes between government troops and cadres from the LTTE in the past year.
